Adoptive Families Support Association

Adoptive Families Support Association (AFSA) is an all-volunteer, non profit support group serving families before, during and after adoption. As one of the oldest and largest such groups in northeast Ohio, AFSA offers the opportunity for families to share the joys, concerns and special circumstances that result from their unique bond. It also provides children a chance to get to know other families like their own, built through adoption.

Meetings

AFSA’s meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month except for July and August at: Korean American Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, 9305 Midwest Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44125.

Please join us on September 13th for Movie Night. We will be watching and discussing the movie, “First Person Plural”-a documentary shown on PBS about a Korean-American adoptee’s struggle to unravel the mysteries surrounding her adoption.

What We Do

In addition to year-round social activities, AFSA offers all of the following services:

  • Monthly meetings and newsletters provide education and assistance to the adoptive family, and offer the opportunity to share experiences and form lasting friendships. Meeting speakers discuss and parenting to school issues and international cultures.
  • A “warmline” offers friendly advice and encouragement to those who may need it before or after adoption. AFSA also maintains a resource list of medical experts and community organizations available to help with a wide range of needs or problems. Just call (216) 491-4638
  • Korean Culture Camp, for school-aged children adopted from abroad (as well as their siblings), helps them learn about their heritage and enhances self-esteem.
  • A resource table at most meetings has multicultural and adoption-relation books and gifts.
